cfObjective After Hours - Moscow On The Hill

Posted by dashAuthor on Apr 23rd, 2008

Hello to everyone that will be attending the 2008 cfObjective conference. Over the next ten days I will post a series of entries based on things to do in The Twin Cities from May 1st to May 4th 2008. Mostly music and food. I have lived in and around Minneapolis / St. Paul for 40 years and I will not suggest a place I have not personally been to. I am not a critic, so I will keep my writing limited to what it is and what I liked.

First Up, Moscow on the Hill - This is a great restaurant featuring authentic Russian food and Vodka. I would suggest having the Czar's Medallions (pork). here is the map link Google Map

I would not suggest walking to there from downtown, it looks short on the map but it up hill both ways, especially when you have been drinking. Take a cab

What do you think of events around town like the Heart of the Beast Annual May Day Parade and Festival?

My family is tagging along and these were some items I found for that might be of interest:

Inspired by Anatole, a charming book by Eve Titus, this show comes to life through the art of puppeteer extraordinaire Mary Jo Nikolai and storyteller Mike Huber. Shows are at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. (Free, but space is limited.) Other activities include a hands-on puppet-making workshop with assistance from the Alliance Française, a scavenger hunt, and a French snack. Sponsored by Best Buy.

Each year, on the first Sunday in May, a grand procession of floats and puppets march joyfully down the streets of Minneapolis towards the Powderhorn Park to kick-off a festival in celebration of spring and human ingenuity.
Organised by the Heart of The Beast Theatre Group since 1975, months before the festivities, a theme is chosen as a result of public brainstorming sessions and floats and puppets are made accordingly. The day commences at 1pm with a parade where participants clad in the most lavish customs, accompanied by an array of puppets and floats head down to Powderhorn park for the festival.

The festival sees a 200-person pageant re-telling the story of the year’s parade with the help of children and adult dancers, puppeteers, a tree of life ceremony, a live orchestra and four giant serene puppets who represent the Prairie, Sky, River, and Woods.

I wasn’t going to post about the May Day Parade because it conflicts with the conference schedule.
But since you brought it up. Yes, it is a fantastic event. I live in South Minneapolis for most i fnot all of my 20’s and this was a yearly staple.
Also, your family may be interested in going to the science museum of minnesota, it is just a few blocks from the Crowne Plaza. I will post on the Science Museum later.

  4. Leslie Says:

    Thanks, Fred!

  5. Jason Dean Says:

In addition to the Science Museum, the Children’s Museum is not far from the Conference. I don’t know how old your tots are but mine LOVE the Children’s Museum.

There are two amazing beer-snob bars in the Selby-Dale neighborhood (near Moscow on the Hill).

The first is the Happy Gnome, with excellent food, and a great selection of Belgians.

The second is the Muddy Pig - the food isn’t up to the Gnome, but they have a great beer selection.

A few of us were interested in trying to catch the new Iron Man movie that opens that weekend. Any recommendations on movie theaters?

    Thanks!!

    @Mel
As far as I know, there are no theaters downtown St. Paul that will be showing this movie.
Your best best is to head out to one of the suburban mega-plex theaters. It will be on a huge screen and way too f’ing loud. But I would guess that is what you want for Iron Man.
There are at least 2 of these theaters I can think of within 10 miles of downtown so you could get a minivan cab or one of the locals to drive.
The two I can think of are about 9 miles east of downtown on Interstate 94.

I also live in St. Paul (however, not as long as Fred). Another place I would recommend is Mancini’s Char House. It’s a short (5 minute) drive from the Hotel and is an excellent steak house and lounge with a live house band.

Dress is casual to dressy and I would recommend reservations if you plan to go there on Friday or Saturday evenings.
